Courtyard House

  • 1246 SF
  • 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath
  • Carport
  • Width 31′, Height 10′, Depth 71′

This courtyard house is made up of module forms to create the semi-enclosed outdoor patio. This form allows for easy reconfiguration to a variety of lot and site shapes or restrictions. A defined outdoor pavilion provides an added bonus area that is often missing in residential plans. The open-air shade pavilion acts as an anchor for the carport canopy structure and can provide a great space for barbecuing or entertaining outside.

Living, kitchen, and dining are connected in an open floor plan making entertaining easy. The ample entry and library provide buffers to the common space. The interior of the house also features a separate toilet and bathing area for added convenience. This slight shift from most bathroom layouts allows for a small house to function efficiently.

Ideally, the home should be oriented with the courtyard facing south for warm and sunny outdoor spaces. Slatted eave overhangs provide shade during the hottest parts of the year to create balanced and comfortable living spaces while reducing cooling costs.

The plan is net zero capable and has been modeled in IECC climate zone 7. As a rough guideline the specifications below achieve net zero for Anchorage, AK. Site specific energy calculations are available.

    Orientation – Courtyard facing south

Location Scenario – Anchorage, AK (IECC climate zone 7)

    Windows – Triple Low E

    Walls – 12.25” SIP panels

    Roof – R38

HVAC – high efficiency package system

PV – 90% roof surface coverage
